Bulgaria Air Tickets

Information and Options

Find out about Bulgaria air tickets and other modes of transportation. Here's how to get there by air, road, rail, and sea.

By Air

There are four airports in Bulgaria. The main airport is Sofia International Airport, located within 30 minutes of the capital city. The second airport situated south of Bulgaria is called Plovdiv International Airport, mainly used for charter flights and for the ski resort of Pamporovo.

The other two airports are located along the Black Sea Coast. Burgas Airport is towards the South of the Black Sea Coast and Varna Airport is to the North. Both of these airports are mainly used by tour operators during the summer season.

Direct Flights to Bulgaria
  • British Airways flys direct to Bulgaria every day from London Heathrow to Sofia. During the summer of 2006, British Airways began launching a new route from London Gatwick direct to Varna twice weekly. Bulgaria air tickets are quite affordable.

  • The Bulgarian national airline has direct flights to Bulgaria from Gatwick to Sofia and Varna.

Indirect Flights to Bulgaria

The other option is to fly indirect to Sofia via another country from the UK. This option works out cheaper, but it could take you around 8 hours to reach your destination because of transfer times.

I recommend using the airlines below.

  • Wizz Air, the largest CEE based low-fare, low-cost airline operates flights from London - Luton to Sofia via Budapest. Bulgaria air tickets on Wizz Air are very economical.

  • Air France Flights from Heathrow to Sofia via Paris

  • Alitalia Flights from Heathrow to Sofia via Milan, Italy

  • Austrian Airlines Flights from Heathrow to Sofia and Varna via Vienna, Austria

  • Lufthansa Flights from Heathrow to Sofia via Frankfurt, Germany

  • Malev Airlines Flights from Heathrow and Manchester to Sofia and Varna

Internal Flight

If you end up in Sofia, and you don’t fancy the 5-7 hour drive to the Black Sea Coast then you can take an internal flight by Hemusair Airways.

Make sure you reserve your seat online before you travel, when you buy Bulgaria air tickets, so that your seat is confirmed upon your arrival. Hemusair offices are located on the first floor, nextdoor to the entrance to the restaurant. Their offices are very small, so you may need to leave your luggage outside with someone.

Recommended Company to Use for Your Flights to Bulgaria

If you’re like me and you don’t want to spend hours surfing the Internet trying to book a flight to Bulgaria, then I recommend you speak with Mari Travel about Bulgaria air tickets. Their business is an independent travel agent based in London, specialising in flights and accommodations to Bulgaria.

I always book my flights through them when I travel to Bulgaria, as it saves me a lot of time and money. I don’t bother with the larger companies as Mari Travel beats them on service and price when I buy Bulgaria air tickets.

By Rail

It is possible to travel to Sofia by train by taking the Eurostar to Paris and from there traveling on to Sofia via Budapest, although it can be a long and uncomfortable journey. Contact Rail Europe for more details.

Getting around Bulgaria itself by train is fairly straightforward and trains go to most major towns and cities, although there can be delays and trains aren’t exactly speedy. Contact Bulgarian State Railways for more details of service.

By Sea

The main international ports are Varna and Bourgas on the Black Sea. There are no regular sea services from the UK.

By river, the official crossing points into Romania are by ferry from Vidin to Calafat and by road via bridge from Ruse to Giurgiu.

By Road

Driving to Bulgaria is not to be undertaken lightly; nevertheless, it is possible to drive via Belgrade. Borders are generally open, but it is important to check prior to departure. Although you can drive over there using your British licence, it is also necessary to take your log book and all paperwork with you. If you are planning on staying longer than six months, you will have to secure a Bulgarian driving licence. Motorway 1 runs from Sofia to the border with Turkey, and the 772 runs from Sofia to Varna. Roads are in bad condition and many carry more than one number, which can cause confusion.

For more information about an international driving licence, visit the AA Web site.

Coach

Eurolines offers services from Paris to Sofia, but there are no direct journeys from the UK to Bulgaria. In Bulgaria itself, there are a number of bus services between the major towns and cities.
